How far did Witte improve and modernise the Russian miserliness?
In 1882, Sergei Witte was appointed by Tsar Nicholas II as finance minister for a backwards Russia. Witte wanted to modernise and alter Russia so that they could compete with the other major European powers such as Germany and Britain. To a certain extent it could be argued that Witte was liable for bringing Russia in to a more modern time. With Witte as finance minister inner-cities such as st Petersburg expanded promptly and started fishing out coal and iron and the trans-Siberian railroad line.
Witte caused sudden and a great deal needed industrialisation of Russian. In 1880 European Russia there was 3.2 one thousand thousand tons of coal produced, however by 1900 under Witte it roseate to 16.1 million tons this happened with most natural resources as things comparable Iron, oil and cereals doubled in growth. This was a massive swap from the past 50 years when agriculture was the main trade was agriculture.
However it could be argued that Witte didnt put enough causa it producing enough surplus grain to export, which would of given the Russian economy a massive boost and enable more stinting growth. This would of cut the debt from loans of major countries.
Wittes main aim was to begin Russia strong enough to maintain its role as a major power however with the Russian race change magnitude for example the population of st Petersburg doubled from 1 million to 2 million so while Witte was improving the economy the population was increasing which meant that there was not enough surpluses to sell and import. plot Witte was improving many big cities like Moscow, Baku and Ukraine, this ineluctably led to poor living and working conditions.
