In this selection Oliver sacks is writing about a man who seems to have an obsession with his hometown. Franco grew up in Pontito, Italy and in conclusion move to America. The events leading up to the point where he left field Pontito were not very pleasant. As a child, Franco was traumatized by the Nazis. In addition to this his father died when he was very young. So at ten years old Franco was fatherless, living in a city that he once loved except is outright destroyed. He made a promise to his mother that he will rebuild Pontito for her. Later on he moved to America which is when his disorder started to develop. He started to have very bright dreams of Pontito. These dreams took over his life. He was dreaming about it as he remembered it as a kid before the Nazis destroyed it. currently after his dreams started he began his blushing mushroomings. Franco was never a painter but now he realized that he can paint nicely and accurately. Thus his obsessive painting began. The paintings were his way of rebuild Pontito for his mother. However, when Sacks Visits Pontito he sees that umteen things have changed and Francos pictures seem to be exaggerated. Franco is drawing everything from the memory of a young boy. To children things such as buildings, stairways, houses, etc. look larger than they really are.
Franco becomes so come to in his drawings and obsessions with Pontito that he starts to lose friends. People have no interest in talking with him because everything is about Pontito. This went on for many years and progressively got more and more intense. except in fact this is not an obsession it is a neurological disorder. At one point he was offered the opportunity to go top and revisit Pontito but he declined. It was as if he was frighten to go back because it may ruin his memories. After his married woman Ruth died, he did finally go back to Pontito. But the first time he goes back he does not have enough time to himself.
