In order to appeal to boys and girls alike, wide range of activities such as hikes, sing-a-longs, military parades and the distribution of rifles and uniforms to each member were just the forgivable benefits of being a part of the youth group. Activities for boys included vigorous games of handle and seek called Trapper and Indian. They also played war games in which the boys create platoons, put on red or blue tree branch bands, and then were supposed to hunt down the enemy and slit off their arm bands. This sometimes resulted in fist fights and directly brawls between platoons. Younger, weaker boys got pummeled while youth leaders stood by or even encouraged the fighting.
