The actions and scenes oscillate between the poles of Rome and Egypt. From the runner of the play, Rome and Egypt are set off against one another, with Caesar representing romish virtues, and Cleopatra Egyptian values: Rome is duty, obligation, austerity, politics, warfare, and honour, where individual sentiment is never allowed to prevail over political machination. Egypt is comfort, pleasure, softness, seduction, sensuousness, and variety, where the beds i th eastern are soft.
