The Roman Forum was the heart of social, political, religious, and commercial breeding for nearly all Roman citizens. Â It contained most of the important organisation buildings, and has been called the most celebrated meeting place in history. Â Among the buildings in the Forum was the basilica Julia. Â Although in ruins today, it was a major center of government during the height of the Roman Empire. Â It housed civil law courts and tabernae, and provided pose for government offices and banking. Â Whenever bad weather didnt permit them to be held outdoors, the Basilica Julia held tribunals and other important activities. Â According to ancient texts, it was a favorite hub of the Roman people, and was always bustling with activity.
Construction of the Basilica Julia in 54 BCE took place under Julius Caesar, and was paid for by the spoils of the Gallic War. Â It was built in the Forum across from the Basilica Aemilia, on the site where the Basilica Sempronia once stood. Â It was finished in 48 BCE and dedicated to Julius Caesar by Augustus, but it burnt devour in 9 BCE. Â The rebuild commenced soon after, and was rededicated to Gaius and Lucius Caesar in 12 CE. Â In 283 CE, it was damaged by fire again, and was restored by Diocletian concisely thereafter.
 Finally, during the sacking of Rome by Alaric in 410 CE, the Basilica Julia was decreased to the rubble it is today.
Although very little remains, the floor plan, as salutary as parts of a back corner, are mute visible.
